May 2, 1865: Confederate gold recaptured

There’s been a lot of speculation in the past few days about Jefferson Davis carrying off a hoard of Confederate gold. The New York Times reports that at least some of the coins have been captured.


WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 2.

A steamer has just been captured while running out of the Rappahannock River. On board of her were found several kegs of specie, stolen from Richmond by the flying rebels.
