December 27, 1863: Johnston takes command

Having lost Chattanooga, Bragg is out; Johnston is in.

Richmond Daily Dispatch:

The army of Tennessee.
Dalton, Dec.27.

–Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and staff arrived here last evening. To day he issued an order assuming command of the Army of Tennessee.
Eleven Yankees captured a short distance from Tunnel Hill yesterday, by a detachment of Kelley’s cavalry, were brought here to day.

December 27, 1863.

In obedience to the orders of His Excellency the President, the undersigned has the honor to assume command of the Army of Tennessee.
