March 29, 1861: Charleston anxious

Pickens
South Carolina governor Francis Pickens

From the New York Times‘ Charleston correspondent:

CHARLESTON, Friday, March 29.

We have no expectation that Fort Sumpter will be evacuated on Saturday. The delay is worrying the people here greatly.

The State Convention has a majority for peace, but not without the evacuation of the Fort.

A messenger from Washington was expected here to day, but did not arrive.

Governor PICKENS says he is ready for fight.

The reports of visits of foreign fleets create no dissatisfaction. France and Spain are now the ascendant Powers in the Southern Confederacy.
