Happy birthday, Ulysses S. Grant (April 27)! I hope someone made him a cake after he wrote this letter to Sherman.

I must say that I'm impressed that you found the whole letter. Not sure how you did that.

Grant's friendship and loyalty to Sherman is highlighted in this note. But that is even further accentuated by the reference to cooperation and support from the Navy's David Dixon Porter and Kidder Randolph Breese - two other loyal and treasured team players.

Moreover, Georgia's statement above specifically eliminates "state's rights" as the cause of the conflict in the clause where it complains that "It has nullified the Fugitive Slave Law in almost every free State in the Union, and has utterly broken the compact, which our fathers pledged their faith to maintain." Ableman v Booth was a precedent-setting 1859 case in which Justice Taney's supreme court found that states were subject to federal law, despite what their own laws or constitutions said. At issue was Wisconsin's attempt to refuse to return runaway slaves. Ironically, this case was cited in Cooper v Aaron in 1958, where the Supreme Court found that southern states had to submit to anti-segregation laws.

The South was only in favor of states' rights when considering the rights of southern states -- primarily the right to own other people.

Breathtaking! The saddest thing is that there are fools who still think like this, but they just try to keep it under cover. Hopefully, their number is constantly diminishing.
