Sophie has (another) job!

Sophie (older now than in this pic) reports that she decided to take the job with a small hotel in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, despite some reservations about being isolated. Apparently she’s going to commute from a nearby town where she knows people. I’m not sure how, although she said something about ziplining.

I’ve been watching DVDs of Fawlty Towers lately, so that’s what I keep picturing. I’m not sure which role she plays: see photo below. I think she’s probably Polly (attractive young waitress, on left), although she might be Manuel (silly foreign bellboy, at bottom). Perhaps she can clarify when she posts about this on her blog.

Well, I’ve always had a soft spot for Manuel. (I think he’s primarily a waiter rather than a bellboy… although I’d have to say I don’t exactly know what a bellboy is. I don’t think British hotels have them.)

I hope Sophie enjoys this job better!

True, he is a waiter. But he’s the one who carries guests’ bags upstairs also, which is the job of a bellboy in America. Along with other errand-running.

I love Fawlty Towers! I’m sure you’ve seen “Upstairs, Downstairs.” We’re pretty obsessed with watching those DVDs these days. They have 5 seasons on Netfix.

  4. K says:

Aha, all is revealed. I have never had my bag carried upstairs by anyone.

  5. Allen says:

Well, I’ve hardly ever stayed in a hotel expensive enough that this would happen. And then you have to tip, too.
