Thursday, April 12th, 2007Top 10 reasons not to hit a cyclist
Wednesday, April 11th, 2007I wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper, and it appeared Sunday. They didn’t put it on the web site, though, so here it is:

The warm weather is bringing out the bicyclists. Several local cyclists have been injured already this year in accidents, so here are my top 10 reasons you should pass cyclists carefully:
10. It’s the law. A bicycle is a vehicle in Missouri (and every other state) and has a right to be on the road, except for interstate highways. Yes, cyclists have to follow the laws too, including stopping for stop signs. Some don’t, but see below for reasons not to hit them anyway.
9. It’s the law. Missouri statute 300.411 requires a motorist to “leave a safe distance while passing a bicycle.”
8. Did I mention that it’s the law? A cyclist is allowed, but specifically not required, to ride on the shoulder of the road.
7. We’re saving you money. Every time I commute on my bike I buy less gas, reducing demand and keeping oil prices lower.
6. We’re saving you money again. Bicycling keeps cyclists healthy, reducing insurance payouts and reducing premiums for everyone.
5. If you crash into me, this eliminates the savings on health insurance premiums.
4. We’re sticking it to the Iranians and Hugo Chavez by reducing the demand for foreign oil.
3. We’re reducing pollution. I may emit some gases while pedaling, but nothing like a car would.
2. We’re reducing global warming. Sure, I’m panting and putting out carbon dioxide, but again, not nearly as much as a car.
1. Brains splattered on your fenders will ruin your paint job.
Why historians wait a while before writing about history…
Monday, April 9th, 2007In the interests of the historical record, I reproduce here an email I received exactly 4 years ago. It was the day that the Marines stage-managed the toppling of Saddam’s statue in Baghdad.:

Hey allen,
Are you depressed now that the idiot peace movement has been shown to be such a sham? Depressed because we have won the Iraq war so easily.? Depressed because George Bush has been vindicated? You and your fellow travelers in the Biology department have been shown to be such idiots. I encourage you and mr. journet to keep speaking out. You are just helping the conservative cause every time you are shown to be so wrong.
I am laughing at you…
Enjoy the war (whats left of it)

US soldiers killed prior to May 1, 2003 “Mission Accomplished” photo op: 140.
Total US soldiers killed to date: 3282
News today: Mass protests against US in Najaf, “Surge” shifts violence out to the provinces.
*The email came from a local high school history teacher who has a grudge against me — I was on his thesis committee, read his thesis repeatedly and critiqued it in detail, and signed the approval form when he defended on his scheduled date. Who wouldn’t be pissed?
Go Floyd!
Saturday, April 7th, 2007I’m watching the US Open Cycling Championships on Tivo, and they just had Floyd Landis in the booth with Bob Roll and the other commentators. The hearings are coming up in May that will determine whether he keeps the Tour de France title or not. Floyd sounded good, as confident as it’s possible to be when you’ve been treated as unfairly as he has. I’m firmly convinced he won clean in the TdF, and I just hope that the hearings expose all the sloppy work in the testing labs. Of course, the best place to find out all the details on this is at Trust But Verify, which has clear and thorough updates on the all the Floyd-related events.
What, if anything, is a reptile?

Here I am finishing. Note absence of other riders behind me.
